Donate to the Play Street!

With spring finally here to stay, the Jackson Heights Green Alliance has begun planning for the summer 2012 Play Street on 78th Street, when we will again close the street to traffic and provide enhanced opportunities for recreation and entertainment all summer long.

Please make a donation to the Play Street using the link on the right, or through our Ioby campaign.

When you donate through Ioby, they will match your donation up to $22, so $78 will result in $100 for the Play Street!

Thank you.

We did it!

Dear Neighbors & Supporters,

We did it! The NY Daily News just reported that the New York City Department of Parks has officially purchased the Garden School athletic field!

This is a tremendous accomplishment! This is a dream realized due to the dedication and commitment of the Jackson Heights community and our local elected officials.

We want to thank everyone who pledged to this effort through our Grow A Park campaign. With almost $500,000 received in pledges we were able to show just how important this issue is to our community.

We are delighted to report that your pledges will not be needed. Instead, we hope that you will consider donating $100 to help us continue these efforts. Click here to donate.

We still have a long road ahead of us to create and protect open space in Jackson Heights. The Jackson Heights Green Alliance is now focused on making the 78th Street Play Street even more successful moving forward.

As we announced at our Town Hall last week, we are delighted that the NYC Department of Transportation has selected 78th Street Play Street to be a permanent car-free Public Plaza. Many more details will be forthcoming, but the process will involve extensive feedback from the community and we will keep you apprised of progress and opportunities to weigh in on the design of the Plaza.

We want to take this opportunity to thank the key people involved in making this happen:

City Council Member Daniel Dromm, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Deputy Mayor Howard Wolfson, Borough President Helen Marshall, Jackson Heights Beautification Group and J.M. Kaplan Fund

Thank you again for all your support in helping make Jackson Heights a more livable place. It really took a village (neighborhood) to get this done!

Sincerely,

The Jackson Heights Green Alliance

Grand Concourse plays Ska from 5-7pm on Sunday, September 25th.

The farewell concert for the Summer Sundays series brings a fantastic Ska band to the Play Street!
Ska is the musical genre of Jamaican independence in the early 1960’s. It’s mix of calypso and rhythm and blues created a rich sound that took Jamaica by storm in a very short period of time (even in the USA with the hit “My Boy Lollipop”). Eventually, Ska morphed into the sound we now know as Reggae, which changed popular music forever. The rich traditions of music that Jamaica continues to give began with one house band called The Skatalites. 50 years later, The Skatalites are still on the road and while the players have changed, the sound remains.

Kevin Batchelor is one of those new members and has become a great part of this institution of Jamaican music. Kevin’s talents as trumpet player are matched by his golden voice and his uncanny ability to entertain a crowd. When he is off the road, he leads a six piece, New York based ska group called Grand Concourse, which features our friendly neighborhood songwriter, Jonny Meyers. The band showcases all original material with close attention to the rhythms and aesthetic of the Jamaican classics. Get on your dancing shoes for this end of summer blowout as Kevin Batchelor’s Grand Concourse makes their Queens debut at Travers Park on September 25th, 5-7pm.
