“Trick or Treat on the Street”! October 31st, 5pm - 78th Street Plaza
Dear Friends & Neighbors,
We hope you are all doing well and are coping with the after-effects of the hurricane as safely as you can. Jackson Heights escaped with relatively minor damage and we are very aware of how lucky we are.
Normally at this time of year, the Jackson Heights Beautification Group organizes a Children’s Halloween Parade, where all the neighborhood kids march down 37th Avenue in costume and receive goody bags at the end of it, all sponsored and organized by the JHBG.
Unfortunately this year due to the storm the NYPD cannot spare the resources to coordinate the event, so it has been cancelled.
We think that it would be nice to give our neighborhood kids something fun to do on Halloween since they can’t go to the parade, so we have come up with a smaller alternative event which we call…
“TRICK OR TREAT ON THE STREET”
5pm, October 31st, 78th Street Plaza (78th street between 34th Avenue and Northern Boulevard)
- Show up with your costumed kids
- Bring some candy to share
- Set up at one of the tables that we’ll provide
- Let your kids trick or treat on the street!
Here is what we have in mind: We have some nice cafe tables from the DoT, and picnic benches which we can line all the way down the street. Parents can stand at these tables with goodies, and the kids can trick or treat their way up and down the street.
Since this is a very last minute thing, we’re going to need some help getting the street ready for this.
We’ll need help with:
- telling the neighborhood about this
- setting the street up tomorrow before the event (just moving some things around, cleaning the storm debris off the street)
- putting the tables out
- and very importantly, putting the tables away at the end of the evening!
If you can help, please send an email to [email protected] to let us know.
The more people who can come, the better this will be, so please tell everyone you know about this, forward this email to friends, print out the flyer that’s here and post it in your buildings and local stores…
Thank you,
The Jackson Heights Green Alliance
p.s. It will probably rain tomorrow, but it’s forecasted to stop at 4 which should be perfect timing. And if it’s still a little drizzly, that will help make it a little more spooky!

Great news for the 78th Street Play Street!
Dear friends and neighbors,
After four years of running a Play Street every Summer we are very excited to finally announce that construction has begun on the 78th Street Public Plaza. This is excellent news for Jackson Heights - it will give our neighborhood more open space, all year round!
We are very grateful to the Department of Transportation for all of the hard work they have done for our community. We are very lucky to have so many forward-thinking and hardworking people helping us with this entire project from the beginning.
We would also like to thank everybody who has participated in the Play Street over the years.
To everyone who has hosted the many wonderful free events that have taken place there - thank you! You have given a lot to our neighborhood, we hope that you continue to host activities in the new Plaza!
To all of you who have volunteered your time and energy to supervise the street, clean it, take care of events on it and make it a success - thanks!
We would also like to thank the Jackson Heights Beautification Group who have always been there, offering help and support.
And none of this would have been possible without the leadership of our City Council Member Daniel Dromm, who has supported this project from the beginning.
However, we still need your support! The JHGA will continue to be responsible for everything that happens on the street, from scheduling events to overseeing the maintenance of the Plaza. To help us launch the Plaza, please consider making a tax deductible contribution — donate.
The DoT has released a flyer which explains the changes that are taking place which you can view below.

Thanks for all of your support! We will keep you updated on any changes as they take place. |
See you on the Plaza! |
